फिर वह कैसा है, यह विषय अगले मन्त्र में कहा है ।
Word-Meaning: - हे जगदीश्वर ! (सः) सो आप कृपा करके (नः) हम लोगों के (स्वस्तये) सुख के लिये (नावया) नाव से (सिन्धुमिव) जैसे समुद्र को पार होते हैं, वैसे दुःखों के (अति, पर्ष) अत्यन्त पार कीजिये (नः) हम लोगों के (अघम्) अशान्ति और आलस्य को (आप, शोशुचत्) निरन्तर दूर कीजिये ॥ ८ ॥
Connotation: - इस मन्त्र में उपमालङ्कार है। जैसे पार करनेवाला मल्लाह सुखपूर्वक मनुष्य आदि को नाव से समुद्र के पार करता है, वैसे तारनेवाला परमेश्वर विशेष ज्ञान से दुःखसागर से पार करता और वह शीघ्र सुखी करता है ॥ ८ ॥इस सूक्त में सभाध्यक्ष अग्नि और ईश्वर के गुणों के वर्णन से इस सूक्त के अर्थ की पिछले सूक्त के अर्थ के साथ सङ्गति जाननी चाहिये ॥यह सत्तानेवाँ सूक्त और पाचवाँ वर्ग समाप्त हुआ ॥

प्रभुरूपी नौका
Word-Meaning: - १. (सः) = वे आप (नः) = हमें (स्वस्तये) = उत्तम स्थिति व कल्याण के लिए उसी प्रकार (अतिपर्षा) = सब पापों से पार करके पालित व पूरित कीजिए (इव) = जैसे (नावया) = नाव के द्वारा (सिन्धुम्) = नदी को पार करते हैं । आपका ‘नाम’ ही इस सागर को तैरने के लिए नाव बन जाए और (नः) = हमारे (अपम्) = पाप (अप) = हमसे दूर तथा (शोशुचत्) = शोक - सन्तप्त होकर नष्ट हो जाएँ ।
२. जैसे समुद्र को पार करने के लिए नाव साधन होती है , उसी प्रकार प्रभु का नाम हमारे लिए संसार - सागर को तैरने के लिए नाव हो जाए । पाप से ऊपर उठकर , पार होकर हम सुखमय स्थिति में हों ।
Connotation: - भावार्थ - हम प्रभु के द्वारा पापों से इस प्रकार पार हो जाएँ जैसे नाव द्वारा समुद्र से पार होते हैं ।
Footnote: विशेष - सूक्त के आरम्भ में कहा है कि पाप को दूर करने के लिए आवश्यक है कि धन को पवित्र साधनों से कमाया जाए [१] । शरीर को उत्तम बनाने के लिए - प्रशस्त मार्ग के लिए तथा वसु की प्राप्ति के लिए प्रभु से मेल किया जाए [२] । लोकहित व सज्जनसंग को अपनाया जाए [३] । ज्ञानीभक्त ही पापशोषण कर पाता है [४] । पाप के दूरीकरण के लिए शक्ति व प्रकाश आवश्यक है [५] । प्रभु ही सर्वतो रक्षक हैं [६] । द्वेष से ऊपर उठना आवश्यक है [७] । प्रभुनाम की नौका बनाकर पाप - समुद्र से पार हुआ जा सकता है [८] । हम उस प्रभु की सुमति में चलें - इन शब्दों के साथ अगला सूक्त आरम्भ होता है -

Word-Meaning: - (सः) जगदीश्वरः (नः) अस्माकम् (सिन्धुमिव) यथा समुद्रं तथा (नावया) नावा। अत्र नौशब्दात्तृतीयैकवचनस्यायाजादेशः। (अति) (पर्ष)। अत्र द्व्यचोऽतस्तिङ इति दीर्घः। (स्वस्तये) सुखाय (अप, नः०) इति पूर्ववत् ॥ ८ ॥
Connotation: - अत्रोपमालङ्कारः। संतारकः सुखेन मनुष्यादीन् नावा सिन्धोरिव परमेश्वरो विज्ञानेन दुःखसागरात्तारयति स सद्यः सुखयति च ॥ ८ ॥ अत्राग्नीश्वरसभाध्यक्षगुणवर्णनादेतदर्थस्य पूर्वसूक्तार्थेन सह सङ्गतिरस्तीति वेद्यम् ॥इति सप्तनवतितमं सूक्तं पञ्चमो वर्गश्च समाप्तः ॥

Footnote: This hymn is connected with the previous hymn as there is mention of the attributes of Agni (fire or electricity) God and President of the Assembly etc. by the use of the word Agni, as in that hymn. Here ends the ninety-seventh hymn of the first Mandala of the Rigveda.
