अब अगले मन्त्र में इन्द्र शब्द से तीन अर्थों का उपदेश किया है-
Word-Meaning: - हम लोग (प्रातः) नित्यप्रति (इन्द्रम्) परम ऐश्वर्य्य देनेवाले ईश्वर का (प्रयत्यध्वरे) बुद्धिप्रद उपासनायज्ञ में (हवामहे) आह्वान करें। हम लोग (प्रयति) उत्तम ज्ञान देनेवाले (अध्वरे) क्रिया से सिद्ध होने योग्य यज्ञ में (प्रातः) प्रतिदिन (इन्द्रम्) उत्तम ऐश्वर्य्यसाधक विद्युत् अग्नि को (हवामहे) क्रियाओं में उपदेश कह सुनके संयुक्त करें, तथा हम लोग (सोमस्य) सब पदार्थों के सार रस को (पीतये) पीने के लिये (प्रातः) प्रतिदिन यज्ञ में (इन्द्रम्) बाहरले वा शरीर के भीतरले प्राण को (हवामहे) विचार में लावें और उसके सिद्ध करने का विचार करें॥३॥
Connotation: - मनुष्यों को परमेश्वर प्रतिदिन उपासना करने योग्य है और उसकी आज्ञा के अनुकूल वर्त्तना चाहिये। बिजुली तथा जो प्राणरूप वायु है, उसकी विद्या से पदार्थों का भोग करना चाहिये॥३॥

इन्द्र का आह्वान
Word-Meaning: - १. हम उस (इन्द्रम्) - परमैश्वर्यशाली प्रभु को ही (प्रातः) - इस जीवन के बाल्यकाल में (हवामहे) - पुकारते हैं । (इन्द्रम्) - उस परमेश्वर्यशाली प्रभु को ही (अध्वरे प्रयति) - इस जीवन - यज्ञ के आगे चलने पर , अर्थात् यौवन में व प्रौढ़ता में पुकारते हैं ।
२. सर्वदा प्रभु का स्मरण इसलिए आवश्यक है कि इस सम्पूर्ण जीवन में प्रभु को ही हमारे लिए इन कामादि वासनाओं को पराभूत करना है । इन वासनाओं को पराभूत करके ही हम अपनी शक्ति की रक्षा कर पाते हैं , अतः कहते हैं कि (इन्द्रम्) - उस परमैश्वर्यशाली प्रभु को ही हम सोमस्य पीतये सोम की रक्षा के लिए पुकारते हैं । प्रभु का नाम - स्मरण ही वासना - विनाश का कारण बन जाता है और हम शरीर में शक्ति की रक्षा कर पाते हैं ।
Connotation: - भावार्थ - हम जीवन के प्रातः , मध्याह्न व सायं - सभी कालों में इन्द्र का स्मरण करते हैं ताकि वासनाओं को पराभूत करके शक्ति का रक्षण कर सकें ।

अथेन्द्रशब्देन त्रयोऽर्था उपदिश्यन्ते।
Anvay:
वयं प्रातः प्रतिदिनमिन्द्रं परमैश्वर्य्यप्रदातारमीश्वरं प्रयत्यध्वरे हवामहे। वयं प्रयत्यध्वरे प्रातः प्रतिदिनमिन्द्रं विद्युदाख्यमग्निं हवामहे। वयं प्रयत्यध्वरे सोमस्य पीतये प्रातः प्रतिदिनमिन्द्रं वायुं हवामहे॥३॥
Word-Meaning: - (इन्द्रम्) परमेश्वरम् (प्रातः) प्रतिदिनम् (हवामहे) आह्वयेम। बहुलं छन्दसि इति सम्प्रसारणम्। (इन्द्रम्) परमैश्वर्य्यसाधकं भौतिकमग्निम्। (प्रयति) प्रैति प्रकृष्टं ज्ञानं ददातीति प्रयत् तस्मिन्। इण् गतौ इत्यस्माल्लटः स्थाने शतृप्रत्ययः। (अध्वरे) उपासनाक्रियासाध्ये यज्ञे (इन्द्रम्) बाह्याभ्यन्तरस्थं वायुम् (सोमस्य) सूयते सर्वेभ्यः पदार्थेभ्यो रसस्तस्य (पीतये) पानाय। अत्र ‘पा’धातोर्बाहुलकात्तिः प्रत्ययः॥३॥
Connotation: - मनुष्यैः परमेश्वरः प्रतिदिनमुपासनीयस्तदाज्ञायां वर्त्तितव्यं च। प्रतियज्ञं विद्युदाख्योऽग्निर्योजनीयः प्राणविद्यया पदार्थभोगश्च कार्य्य इति॥३॥

Word-Meaning: - Every morning, in every yajnic programme of body, mind and soul, we invoke, awake and develop Indra, lord omnipotent of light and honour, Indra, solar and electric energy, and Indra, energy of wind and prana for the protection, promotion and enjoyment of soma, spiritual bliss, pleasure and joy, and power and prosperity.

Now by the term Indra, three substances are taught. (God, Agni in the form of electricity) and the prana or Vital breath.
Anvay:
(1) Every day in the morning, we invoke or remember God Who is the Giver of great wealth during the inner non-violent sacrifice of the communion or contemplation which gives us true knowledge for drinking the juice of peace. (2) Every day in the morning, we invoke the fire in the form of electricity in the non-violent sacrifice of art and industry for drinking the juice of various articles. (3) Every day in the morning, we invoke in the non-violent sacrifice the inner and the outer form of Vayu or air, inner being in the form of Prana or vital breath for taking the sap of various substances.
Word-Meaning: - प्रथमचरणे (इन्द्रम्) परमेश्वरम् = God.
द्वितीयचरणे ( इन्द्रम् ) परमैश्वर्यसाधकं भौतिकमग्निम् विधुदूपं वा = Electricity. तृतीयचरणे (इन्द्रम्) बाह्याभ्यन्तरस्थं वायुम-माणरूपं वायुं
च (प्रयति) प्रेति-प्रकृष्टं ज्ञानं ददातीति = Prana and air
प्रयत् तस्मिन् इण्-गतावित्यस्मात् शतृप्रत्ययः = Giver of knowledge.
(सोमस्य) सूयते सर्वेभ्यः पदार्थेभ्यो रसस्तस्य
= of the sap or juice.
Connotation: - Men should contemplate on God or adore Him every day and should according to His injunctions (contained in the
Vedas). They should yoke Agni (fire in the form of electricity etc.) in every Yajna (philanthropic activity). They should enjoy all things properly acquiring the knowledge of the science of Prana or Vital energy.
Footnote: This is one of the most important Mantras showing the significance or distinguishing feature of Rishi Dayananda's commentary. Sayanacharya, Skanda Swami, Venkat Madhava all have given only one meaning for the word Indra used here. Skanda Swami the earliest commentator of them explains Indra as इदि परमैश्व सुष्ठु ईश्वरम् प्रयति प्रवृत्ते Sayanacharya simply says- प्रातः कर्माम्मे प्रातः सव इन्द्रं हवामहे आह्वयाम: तथैवाध्वरे सामयागे प्रयति-प्रगच्छति वर्तमाने संति मध्यन्दिनसवने तमिन्द्रं हवामहे | तथा यज्ञस्य समाप्त्यवसरे तृतीयसवने सोमस्य पीतये सोमपानार्थं हवामहे ॥
Prof. Wilson following Sayanacharya translates-
"We invoke Indra in the morning rite, we invoke him at the succeeding sacrifice, we invoke Indra to drink the juice.
GRIFFITH'S TRANSLATION IS
“Indra at early morn we call, Indra in course of sacrifice, Indra to drink the juice. But Rishi Dayananda gives three different meanings of the word Indra as (1) God, the Lord and Giver of great wealth (2) Agni or fire particularly in the form of electricity (3) Prana-vital breath and air Vayu. For the meaning of Indra as electricity the following passages may be quoted from the Brahmanas. यदशनिरिन्द्रस्तेन ( कौषीतकी ब्राह्मणे ६. ९)
i. e. Electricity is Indra ( kaushi. Bra. 6.9).
In the Shatapath Brahmana 11.6.3-9 it is stated स्तनयित्नुरेवेन्द्र: ( शत० ११. ६. ३. ९) i.e. Lightning or electricity is called Indra. So Rishi Dayananda's meaning is well-authenticated and is not his own imagination. As for the meaning of the word Indra as Prana or Vayu, it is to be remembered that in. Shatapath Brahmana 6.1.2-28 it is stated प्राण इन्द्र: (शत० ६.१.२.२८ ) i. e. Indra is. Prana In the Shatapath 14.2.2-6 it is stated as we have already quoted अर्थं वा इन्द्रोयोऽयंवातः पवते (शत० १४. २. २.६ ) Indra is air. In Shatapath Brahmana 4.1.3.19 it it is stated
यो वै वायुः स इन्द्रः य इन्द्रः स वायु : ( शत० ४. १. ३. १९ )
i. e. Indra is called Vayu (air) and air is called Indra The two are synonymous terms. So Rishi Dayananda's interpretation is not only wonderful showing the fertility of his brain, but it is well-authenticated from ancient. Vedic literature, as shown above.
