फिर वे किस प्रकार के हैं, इस विषय का उपदेश अगले मन्त्र में किया है-
Word-Meaning: - मैं (यौ) जो (ऋतेन) परमेश्वर ने उत्पन्न करके धारण किये हुए (ऋतावृधौ) जल को बढ़ाने और (ऋतस्य) यथार्थ स्वरूप (ज्योतिषः) प्रकाश के (पती) पालन करनेवाले (मित्रावरुणौ) सूर्य और वायु हैं, उनको (हुवे) ग्रहण करता हूँ॥५॥
Connotation: - न सूर्य और वायु के विना जल और ज्योति अर्थात् प्रकाश की योग्यता, न ईश्वर के उत्पादन किये विना सूर्य्य और वायु की उत्पत्ति का सम्भव और न इनके विना मनुष्यों के व्यवहारों की सिद्धि हो सकती है॥५॥

ऋत+ज्योतिः
Word-Meaning: - १. मैं (ता) - उन (मित्रावरुणा) - मित्र और वरुण को , स्नेह व अद्वेष को (हुवे) - पुकारता हैं , (यौ) - जो (ऋतेन) - ठीक समय व ठीक स्थान पर कार्य करने से (ऋतावृधौ) - मुझमें ऋत का वर्धन करनेवाले हैं - मेरे जीवन में सत्य के पनपाने का कारण बनते हैं और (ऋतस्य) - सत्य के तथा (ज्योतिषः) - ज्ञान के (पती) - रक्षक हैं ।
२. जिस समय मनुष्य अपने व्यवहारों को स्नेह व अद्वेषपूर्वक करता है उस समय उसके जीवन में [क] ऋत होता है - उसके सब कार्य समय व स्थान की दृष्टि से ठीक होते हैं , उसके जीवन में व्यवस्था होती है । [ख] इस व्यवस्था के कारण उसमें ऋत का , सत्य का व यज्ञ का वर्धन होता है । उसके कार्य सत्य होते है , सत्य कार्य वे होते हैं जो यज्ञात्मक हैं - अधिक - से - अधिक भूतों - प्राणियों का हित करनेवाले हैं । यद् भूतहितमत्यन्तं तत्सत्यमिति धारणा [महाभारत] । [ग] व्यवस्था व सत्य को धारण करनेवाला यह पुरुष सत्य व ज्ञान का पति बनता है । उसके मन में 'सत्य' की स्थिति होती है और मस्तिष्क में 'ज्ञान' की ।
Connotation: - भावार्थ - हम मित्र व वरुण की आराधना करें - स्नेह व अद्वेष को जीवन का सूत्र बनाएँ । ऐसा करने पर हमारे जीवनों में [क] व्यवस्था [ख] यज्ञात्मक कर्म [ग] सत्य व [घ] ज्ञान का परितोषण होगा । हम अनृत को छोड़ सत्य को अपना रहे होंगे ।

पुनस्तौ कीदृशावित्युपदिश्यते।
Anvay:
अहं यावृतेन जगदीश्वरेणोत्पाद्य धारितावृतावृधावृतस्य ज्योतिषस्पती मित्रावरुणौ स्तस्तौ हुवे॥५॥
Word-Meaning: - (ऋतेन) सत्यरूपेण ब्रह्मणा निर्मितौ सन्तौ (यौ) (ऋतावृधौ) ऋतं सत्यं कारणं जलं वा वर्द्धयतस्तौ। अत्रान्तर्गतो ण्यर्थः। अन्येषामपि दृश्यते इति दीर्घश्च। (ऋतस्य) यथार्थस्वरूपस्य (ज्योतिषः) प्रकाशस्य (पती) पालयितारौ। अत्र षष्ठ्याः पतिपुत्रपृष्ठपार० (अष्टा०८.३.५३) अनेन विसर्जनीयस्य सकारादेशः। (ता) तौ (मित्रावरुणा) मित्रश्च वरुणश्च द्वौ सूर्यवायू। अत्र देवताद्वन्द्वे च। (अष्टा०६.३.३६) अनेन पूर्वपदस्यानङादेशः। अत्रोभयत्र सुपां सुलुग्० इत्याकारादेशः। (हुवे) आददे। अत्र व्यत्ययेनात्मनेपदं बहुलं छन्दसि इति शपो लुक् च॥५॥
Connotation: - नैव सूर्यवायुभ्यां विना जलज्योतिषोरुत्पत्तेः सम्भवोऽस्ति नैव चेश्वरोत्पादनेन विना सूर्य्यवाय्वोरुत्पत्तिर्भवितुं शक्या, न चैताभ्यां विना मनुष्याणां व्यवहारसिद्धिर्भवितुमर्हतीति॥५॥

Word-Meaning: - For our enlightenment and spiritual advance ment, we invoke Mitra and Varuna, light of the sun and motive energy of the wind, both guardians of the light of truth and natural laws of Divinity, which, by that very light of truth, extend the operation of that law in the Lord’s creation upto the mind and soul of humanity.

How are they (Mitra and Varuna) is taught in the fifth Mantra.
Anvay:
I invoke or remember the sun and the wind which are created and upheld by the Absolutely True God, are increasers of true material cause (Matter) or water and guardians of true light.
Word-Meaning: - (ॠतेन ) सत्यरूपेण ब्रह्मणा निर्मिती सन्तौ
= Created by God Who is absolutely True.
(ऋतावृधौ) ऋतं सत्यं कारणं जलं वा वर्धयन्तौ
= Increasers of true material cause and water.
(मित्रावरुणौ ) मित्रश्च वरुणश्च द्वौ सूर्यवायू अत्र देवताद्वन्द्वे च । (अष्टा० ६.३.३६) अनेन पूर्वपदस्यानडादेशः । अत्रोभयत्र सुपां सु लुक् इत्याकारादेशः ।।
Connotation: - The creation of the water and light is not possible without the air and the sun. These (the sun and the air) cannot be created except by God and without them (the sun and the air) men cannot accomplish any work.
Footnote: ऋतमिति सत्यनाम (निघ० ३.१० ) = True and absolutely True God.
ऋतमिति उदकनाम (निघ० १.१२ ) = Water. So Rishi Dayananda has explained the word Rita as true, absolutely True God and water. Here Rishi Dayananda has taken the word (Mitra) for the sun, for which the Vedic Mantras like
मित्रो जनान् यातयति ब्रवाणो मित्रो दाधार पृथिवीमुत द्याम् । मित्रः कृष्टीरनिमिषाभि चष्टे मित्राय हव्यं घृतवज्जुहोत (ऋ० ३.५९.१ ) are clear as admitted by all the commentators. Even in ordinary classical Sanskrit, the word मित्र: in masculine is used for the sun. In the Vedic Lexicon Nighantu the word Mitra is मित्र इति पदनाम (निघ० ५.४ ) पद-गतौ गतेस्त्रयोऽर्था ज्ञानं गमनं प्राप्तिश्च if we take the third meaning Mitra may be used for the sun as प्रकाशप्रापक: the cause of light. Besides, in the Aitareya Brahmana of the Rigveda it is stated. श्रहवें मित्रः (ऐतरेय ४-१० ) the word Mitra stands for the day. It is therefore also used for the sun as the lord of the day. The same thing is said in the Tandya Brahmana 25.10.10 of the Sama Veda अहमिंत्र: (ताण्ड्य. २५.१०.१०.) According to this also as Mitra stands for the day, it is equally used for the sun as the lord or cause of the day.
Rishi Dayananda has taken वरुण ( Varuna) for the वायु air or wind. It is derived from बृञ्-वरणे to accept. As air is acceptable to all, it is called Varuna. It is therefore used for प्राण also यः प्राणः स वरुणः ॥ (गोपथ उ० ४. ११) In the Vedic Lexicon Nighantu 5.4. and 5. 6. it is stated वरुण इति पदनाम (निघ० ५० ४, ५. ६ ) पद-गतौ ज्ञानं गमनं प्राप्तिश्च Taking the second and third meaning, as the air causes movement and causes happiness सुखस्य प्रापक so it is called Varuna.

Connotation: - सूर्य व वायूशिवाय जलवृद्धी व ज्योती अर्थात प्रकाश निर्माण होऊ शकत नाही. ईश्वराने निर्माण केल्याखेरीज सूर्य व वायूची उत्पत्तीही शक्य नाही व त्यांच्याखेरीज माणसांच्या व्यवहाराची सिद्धी होऊ शकत नाही. ॥ ५ ॥
