ईश्वर पूर्वोक्त सूर्य्य और वायु को दूसरे नाम से अगले मन्त्र में स्पष्ट करता है-
Word-Meaning: - मैं शिल्पविद्या का चाहनेवाला मनुष्य, जो (घृताचीम्) जलप्राप्त करानेवाली (धियम्) क्रिया वा बुद्धि को (साधन्ता) सिद्ध करनेवाले हैं, उन (पूतदक्षम्) पवित्रबल सब सुखों के देने वा (मित्रम्) ब्रह्माण्ड में रहनेवाले सूर्य्य और शरीर में रहनेवाले प्राण-मित्रो० इस ऋग्वेद के प्रमाण से मित्र शब्द करके सूर्य्य का ग्रहण है-तथा (रिशादसम्) रोग और शत्रुओं के नाश करने वा (वरुणं च) शरीर के बाहर और भीतर रहनेवाला प्राण और अपानरूप वायु को (हुवे) प्राप्त होऊँ अर्थात् बाहर और भीतर के पदार्थ जिस-जिस विद्या के लिये रचे गये हैं, उन सबों को उस-उस के लिये उपयोग करूँ॥७॥
Connotation: - इस मन्त्र में लुप्तोपमालङ्कार है। जैसे समुद्र आदि जलस्थलों से सूर्य्य के आकर्षण से वायु द्वारा जल आकाश में उड़कर वर्षा होने से सब की वृद्धि और रक्षा होती है, वैसे ही प्राण और अपान आदि ही से शरीर की रक्षा और वृद्धि होती है। इसलिये मनुष्यों को प्राण अपान आदि वायु के निमित्त से व्यवहार विद्या की सिद्धि करके सब के साथ उपकार करना उचित है॥७॥

Word-Meaning: - १. (मित्रम्) - स्नेह के देवता को (हुवे) - मैं पुकारता हूँ , अर्थात् मैं यह आराधना करता हूँ कि मेरे हृदय में 'मित्र' का निवास हो , अर्थात् सदा स्नेह की भावना से मैं भी सभी के साथ प्रेम से वर्तनेवाला बनूँ । यह स्नेह की भावना वह है जो कि (पूतदक्षम्) - हमारे बलों को पवित्र करनेवाली है । स्नेह की भावना होने पर भोजन से उत्तम रस आदि धातुओं का निर्माण होता है , इस प्रकार बल की वृद्धि होती है ।
२. (च) - और (वरुणम्) - द्वेष - निवारण के देवता को पुकारता हूँ । मैं प्रयत्न करता हूँ कि मेरे हृदय में किसी के प्रति द्वेष न हो । यह वरुण देवता (रिशादसम्) - [रिश हिंसक , अद् - खा जाना] हिंसकों को खा जानेवाला है , अर्थात् द्वेष के न होने पर हमारा शरीर हिंसक तत्त्वों का शिकार नहीं होता । द्वेष से तो मनुष्य अन्दर-ही-अन्दर जलता चला जाता है । हृदय में द्वेष की भावना की प्रबलता के समय खाया हुआ अन्न विषों को जन्म देता है , न कि रक्त आदि धातुओं को । इसी दृष्टिकोण से प्रसन्न मन से भोजन करने का महत्त्व अति स्पष्ट है । मनु लिखते हैं "दृष्ट्वा हृष्येत् प्रसीदेच्च" इसी का अनुवाद इन शब्दों में किसी कवि ने किया है कि - "अश्नीयात्तन्मना भूत्वा प्रसन्नेन मनसा सदा ।"
३. ये मित्र व वरुण , अर्थात् स्नेह व निर्द्वेषता (घृताचीम्) [घृ - क्षरण , दीप्ति] मलों के क्षरण व ज्ञान की दीप्ति को प्राप्त करानेवाले (धियम्) - ज्ञानपूर्वक कर्मों को (साधन्ता) सिद्ध करते हैं । स्नेह व निर्द्वेषता जहाँ हमारे शरीरों को मलों के शोधन द्वारा शुद्ध व निरोग बनाते हैं , वहाँ ये दोनों देव दीप्ति के द्वारा मस्तिष्क को भी उज्ज्वल करते हैं ।
Connotation: - भावार्थ - स्नेह व द्वेषनिवारण के द्वारा हम अपने जीवनों को पवित्र व उज्ज्वल बनाएँ ।

अहं शिल्पविद्यां चिकीर्षुर्मनुष्यो यौ घृताचीं धियं साधन्तौ वर्त्तेते तौ पूतदक्षं मित्रं रिशादसं वरुणं च हुवे॥७॥
Word-Meaning: - (मित्रम्) सर्वव्यवहारसुखहेतुं ब्रह्माण्डस्थं सूर्य्यं शरीरस्थं प्राणं वा। मित्र इति पदनामसु पठितम्। (निघं०५.४) अतः प्राप्त्यर्थः। मि॒त्रो जना॑न्यातयति ब्रुवा॒णो मि॒त्रो दा॑धार पृथि॒वीमु॒त द्याम्। मि॒त्रः कृ॒ष्टीरनि॑मिषा॒भिच॑ष्टे मि॒त्राय॑ ह॒व्यं घृ॒तव॑ज्जुहोत॥ (ऋ०३.५९.१) अत्र मित्रशब्देन सूर्य्यस्य ग्रहणम्। प्राणो वै मित्रोऽपानो वरुणः। (श०ब्रा०८.२.५.६) अत्र मित्रवरुणशब्दाभ्यां प्राणापानयोर्ग्रहणम्। (हुवे) तन्निमित्तां बाह्याभ्यन्तरपदार्थविद्यामादद्याम्। बहुलं छन्दसीति विकरणाभावो व्यत्ययेनात्मनेपदं लिङर्थे लट् च। (पूतदक्षम्) पूतं पवित्रं दक्षं बलं यस्मिन् तम्। दक्ष इति बलनामसु पठितम्। (निघं०२.९) (वरुणं च) बहिःस्थं प्राणं शरीरस्थमपानं वा। (च) (रिशादसम्) रिशा रोगाः शत्रवो वाऽदसो हिंसिता भवन्ति येन तम्। (धियम्) कर्म धारणावतीं बुद्धिं च। धीरिति कर्मनामसु पठितम्। (निघं०२.१), प्रज्ञानामसु च। (निघं०३.९)। (घृताचीम्) घृतं जलमञ्चति प्रापयतीति तां क्रियाम्। घृतमित्युदकनामसु पठितम्। (निघं०१.१२) (साधन्ता) सम्यक् साधयन्तौ। अत्र सुपां सुलुगित्याकारादेशः॥७॥
Connotation: - अत्र लुप्तोपमालङ्कारः। यथा सूर्य्यवायुनिमित्तेन समुद्रादिभ्यो जलमुपरि गत्वा तद्वृष्ट्या सर्वस्य वृद्धिरक्षणे भवतः, एवं प्राणापानाभ्यां च शरीरस्य। अतः सर्वैर्मनुष्यैराभ्यां निमित्तीकृताभ्यां व्यवहारविद्यासिद्धेः सर्वोपकारः सदा निष्पादनीय इति॥७॥

I who am desirous of acquiring the knowledge of arts and crafts, accept the sun of pure vigor in the sky which gives us happiness in our daily activities on account of his light and the Prana residing in the body which is the devourer of diseases, as they accomplish the act of composing water. In the same way, I acquire the science of prana and Apana (inhalation and exhalation etc.)"which is the destroyer of various maladies.
Word-Meaning: - Here the Mitra has been taken to mean the Sun for which the Rishi has quoted from the Rig. 3.89) मित्रोजनान् यातयतिब्रुवाणो मित्रो ढाधारपृथिवीमुतद्याम् । मित्र: कृष्टीरनिमिषाभिचष्टे मित्राय हव्यं घृतवज्जुहोत ||
In this Mantra, it is clear that the word "Mitra" is used for the sun which upholds the earth and the heaven. मित्र इति पदनामसु (निघ० ५-४)(Nighantu 5.4) has been quoted to show that the word "Mitra" stands for the sun. प्राणो वै मित्रः अपानो वरुणः । शत० ८.२.५६ According to this passage from Shatapath 8.2.5.6. the word Mitra is used here to denote "Prana" and the word वरुण अपान ।
Connotation: - As on account of the sun and the air, the water goes to the sky from oceans and it causes rain preserving and protecting all, in the same way, the Prana and Apana also preserve and protect the body. Therefore people should thoroughly acquire the science of the sun and the air as well as the Science of the Prana and Apana (vital breaths) in order to do good to all.
Footnote: The Vedic words have got, several meanings from the Adhyatmik (spiritual) Adhibhautik (Social) and Adhidaivik or or scientific and cosmic points of view. Pandit Guru Datt M. A. a great scientist and a distinguished scholar of the Vedas- the founder and editor of the "Vedic Magazine "explained the above Mantra in the following manner from the Adhidaivik (Scientific and Cosmic) stand point. "This Mantra मित्रं हुवे पूतदक्षं describes the process or steps ( Dhiyam ) whereby the well-known of liquids, water, can be formed by the combination of two other substances (ghritachim Sadhanta). The word "Sadhanta" is in the dual number indicating that it is two elementary bodies which combine to form water. The words used to indicate those two substances are Mitra and Varuna. The first literal meaning of Mitra is measurer. The name is given to a substance that stands as it were, as a measure or as a standard substance. It is the measurer of density or of value otherwise known as quantivalence. The other meaning of Mitra is associate. Now, in this Mantra, Mitra (मित्र) is described as an associate of Varuna (वरुणा). It will be shown how Varuna indicates Oxygen Gas. Now it is well known that hydrogen is not only the lightest element known, nor is it only monovalent, but that it has strong affinity for Oxygen, hence it is described as an associate of Varuna. Many other analogies in the properties of Mitra and Hydrogen go to suggest that what is in the Vedic terms styled as Mitra (मित्र) is in fact identical with hydrogen, Mitra for instance occurs as synonymous with Udana (उदान), in many parts of the Veda, Udana is well characterised by its power to lift up." The second element with which we are concerned is Varuna. Varuna is the substance that is acceptable to all.It is the element that every living being needs to live. Its well-known property is rishadas (रिशादस्) i. e. it eats away or rusts, all the base metals, burns all the bones etc. and physiologically purifies the blood by oxidizing it, and thereby keeping the frame alive. It is by these properties Varuna (वरुण) is in general distinguished, but it is especially characterized here as rishadas (रिशादस्). No one will fail to perceive that the substance thus distinctly characterized is oxygen gas. Another word used in the Mantra is पूतदक्ष (Putadaksha), Puta is pure, free from in purities. Daksha means energy. Putadaksham is a substance pure, possessed of kinetic energy. Who that is acquainted with the Kinetic theory of gases, can not see in Putadaksha the properties of a gas highly heated? The meaning of the Mantra taken as a whole is this "Let one who is desirous to form water by the combination of two substances, take pure hydrogen gas highly heated and Oxygen gas possessed of the property rishadas and let him combine them to form water," (Pt. Guru Dutt M.A. in "Wisdom of the Rishis" published by Sarvadeshik Pustakalaya, Delhi, P. 101.102).
