अगले मन्त्र में भौतिक अग्नि के गुणों का उपदेश किया है-
Word-Meaning: - यह (अग्ने) अग्नि (यत्) जिस कारण (बर्हिषि) अन्तरिक्ष में (देवैः) दिव्य पदार्थों के संयोग से (दूत्यम्) दूत भाव को (आयासि) सब प्रकार से प्राप्त होता है, (तान्) उन दिव्य गुणों को (विबोधय) विदित करानेवाला होता और उन पदार्थों के (सत्सि) दोषों का विनाश करता है, इससे सब मनुष्यों को विद्यासिद्धि के लिये इस अग्नि की ठीक-ठीक परीक्षा करके प्रयोग करना चाहिये॥४॥
Connotation: - परमेश्वर आज्ञा देता है कि-हे मनुष्यो ! यह अग्नि तुम्हारा दूत है, क्योंकि हवन किये हुए परमाणुरूप पदार्थों को अन्तरिक्ष में पहुँचाता और उत्तम-उत्तम भोगों की प्राप्ति का हेतु है। इससे सब मनुष्यों को अग्नि के जो प्रसिद्ध गुण हैं, उनको संसार में अपने कार्य्यों की सिद्धि के किये अवश्य प्रकाशित करना चाहिये॥४॥

विबोधन
Word-Meaning: - १. गत मन्त्र की प्रार्थना के अनुसार 'प्रभु अपने भक्तों का दिव्यगुणों के साथ सम्बन्ध करते हैं । इसी बात को स्पष्ट करते हुए कहते हैं कि हे (अग्ने) - प्रकाशस्वरूप परमात्मन् ! सब देवों के अग्रणी प्रभो ! (उशतः) आपकी कामनावाले (तान्) - उन हम सबको (विबोधय) - विशिष्ट रूप से बोधवाला कीजिए । हमारे हृदयों को आप प्रकाशित कीजिए । हे अग्ने (यत्) - जो आप (दूत्यम्) - दूत - कर्म को (यासि) - प्राप्त होते हैं । अन्य दूत औरों के सन्देश को वहन किया करते हैं , आप अपने सन्देश को ही हमें प्राप्त कराते हैं , अथवा काव्यमय भाषा में कह सकते हैं कि आप इन सूर्यादि देवों के सन्देश को हम तक पहुँचा रहे हैं । हमें इन सूर्यादि देवों के साथ किस प्रकार वर्तना है , यही मानो उनका सन्देश है । प्रभु इस सन्देश को हमें वेद के द्वारा प्राप्त करा रहे हैं । उसे सुनकर हम अपने जीवन को अधिकाधिक उन्नत व सुखी कर सकते हैं ।
२. जब हम प्रभु के इस सन्देश को सुनते हैं , जब हमारे हदय प्रकाशमय होते हैं तब हे प्रभो । (देवैः) सब दिव्यगुणों के साथ (बर्हिषि) - हमारे वासनाशून्य हृदयों में आसत्सि - आप विराजमान होते हो ।
Connotation: - भावार्थ - हममें प्रभु - प्राप्ति की कामना हो , हम प्रभु के सन्देश को सुनें , प्रभु हमारे हृदयों में अवश्य विराजमान होंगे ।

अथाग्निगुणा उपदिश्यन्ते।
Anvay:
योऽग्निर्यद्यस्माद् बर्हिषि देवैः सह दूत्यमायासि समन्ताद्याति, तानुशतो विबोधय विबोधयति, तेषां दोषान्सत्सि हन्ति, तस्मादेतैरयं विद्यासिद्धये सर्वथा सर्वदा परीक्ष्य सम्प्रयोजनीयोऽस्ति॥४॥
Word-Meaning: - (तान्) दिव्यान् गुणान् (उशतः) कामितान्। अत्र कृतो बहुलमिति कर्मणि लटः स्थाने शतृप्रत्ययः। (वि) विविधार्थे। व्यपेत्येतस्य प्रातिलोम्यं प्राह। (निरु०१.३) (बोधय) बोधयति। अत्र व्यत्ययः। (यत्) यस्मात् (अग्ने) अग्निः (यासि) याति। अत्र पुरुषव्यत्ययः। (दूत्यम्) दूतस्य कर्म। दूतस्य भागकर्मणी। (अष्टा०४.४.१२१) अनेन दूतशब्दाद्यत्प्रत्ययः। (देवैः) दिव्यैः पदार्थैः सह (आ) समन्तात् (सत्सि) दोषान् हिनस्ति। अयं ‘विशरणार्थे षद्लृ धातोः’ प्रयोगः पुरुषव्यत्ययश्च। (बर्हिषि) अन्तरिक्षे॥४॥
Connotation: - जगदीश्वर आज्ञापयति-अयमग्निर्युष्माकं दूतोऽस्ति। कुतः? हुतान् दिव्यान् परमाणुरूपान् पदार्थानन्तरिक्षे गमयतीत्यतः, उत्तमानां भोगानां प्रापकत्वात्। तस्मात्सर्वैर्मनुष्यैः प्रसिद्धाः प्रसिद्धस्याग्नेर्गुणाः कार्य्यार्थे नित्यं प्रकाशनीया इति॥४॥

Word-Meaning: - Agni, purify and activate the libations lighted by the fire which you have carried to the skies, and bring them back home to the seat of yajna with gifts divine.

Anvay:
Since this Agni (fire) goes to the middle region along with divine articles and awakens the desired objects (purifies and makes them subtle) like a messenger, by removing their impurities, therefore it should be properly investigated and utilized for the accomplishment of various sciences after experimentation.
Word-Meaning: - N/A
Connotation: - God commands that this fire is your messenger, because it takes to the sky articles that have been put into it in the subtle form of atoms. Thus it causes divine enjoyment of happiness. Therefore men should reveal the properties of this fire for proper utilization in various purposes.
Footnote: In this and many Mantras of this kind where Rishi Dayananda has interpreted them in the case of fire, air etc., he has pointed out that their case, person etc. is to be changed. Though such change of case, person etc. is permissible in the Vedas according to the rules of grammar like व्यत्ययो वहुलम् (अष्टा.३.१.८५) etc. as a matter of fact, it is not necessary to do so. It could be taken as it is. For instance, it could be translated O fire, thou like a messenger, takest articles away to distant places etc. This is always done by poets and even other writers. In the Nirukta, Shri Yaskacharya has clearly stated अचेतनान्यपि चेतन्वत् स्तूयन्ते (नि दैवतकाष्ठु ७.१ ), i. e. in the Vedas, sometimes inanimate objects are praised as if they were animate. That is a particular style. But in order to make it quite clear lest people may misunderstand it, Rishi Dayananda
thought it advisable to change the case and gender etc. in his interpretation. This is a point which is to be clearly understood and by not understanding which ill-founded criticism has been levelled by some prejudiced people against Rishi Dayananda's sound 'interpretation.

Connotation: - परमेश्वर आज्ञा देतो की - हे माणसांनो ! हा अग्नी तुमचा दूत आहे. कारण हवन केलेल्या परमाणूरूपी पदार्थांना तो अंतरिक्षात पोहोचवितो व उत्तम भोगाच्या प्राप्तीचा हेतू आहे. त्यामुळे सर्व माणसांनी अग्नीच्या प्रसिद्ध गुणांना आपल्या कार्याच्या सिद्धीसाठी या जगात अवश्य प्रकाशित केले पाहिजे. ॥ ४ ॥
