फिर वह कैसा हो, इस विषय को अगले मन्त्र में कहा है ।
Word-Meaning: - जो (उरु) बहुत (तत्) उस विद्या के पाठ को (शुश्राव) सुनता है वह विज्ञान को (कृण्वन्) प्रकट करता हुआ (त्रितः) विद्या, शिक्षा और ब्रह्मचर्य्य इन तीन विषयों का विस्तार करने अर्थात् इनको बढ़ाने (कूपे) कूआ के आकार अपने हृदय में (अवहितः) स्थिरता रखने और (बृहस्पतिः) बड़ी वेदवाणी का पालनेहारा (अंहूरणात्) जिस व्यवहार में अधर्म है उससे अलग होकर (ऊतये) रक्षा, आनन्द, कान्ति, प्रेम, तृप्ति आदि अनेकों सुखों के लिये (देवान्) दिव्य गुणयुक्त विद्वानों वा दिव्य गुणों को (हवते) ग्रहण करता है। और शेष मन्त्रार्थ प्रथम के तुल्य जानना चाहिये ॥ १७ ॥
Connotation: - जो मनुष्य वा देहधारी जीव अर्थात् स्त्री आदि भी अपनी बुद्धि से प्रयत्न के साथ पण्डितों की उत्तेजना से समस्त विद्याओं को सुन, मान, विचार और प्रकट कर खोटे गुण स्वभाव वा खोटे कामों को छोड़कर विद्वान् होता है, वह आत्मा और शरीर की रक्षा आदि को पाकर बहुत सुख पाता है ॥ १७ ॥

कूप से उत्थान की प्रार्थना
Word-Meaning: - १. ‘त्रित’ वह है जो आरम्भ में काम - क्रोध व लोभ से अभिभूत हो जाता है ‘त्रय एनं तरन्ति’ [तृ to overcome] । जब कुछ देर की चमक - दमक के पश्चात् यह रोगों और कष्टों से आक्रान्त होता है तब अब यह ‘काम - क्रोध व लोभ’ को जीतने की कामना करता है - त्रीन् तरति । कष्ट में पड़ना ही यहाँ कुएँ में गिरना कहा गया है । (त्रितः) = यह (त्रित कूपे) = कष्टरूपी कूप [कष्ट - सागर] में (अवहितः) = नीचे गिराया हुआ (ऊतये) = अपने रक्षण के लिए (देवान् हवते) = देवों को पुकारता है । ज्ञानियों से , ज्ञान देकर रक्षण के लिए प्रार्थना करता है । इसके भीतर यह भावना उत्पन्न होती है कि मैं इन कामादि का अविभव करके किसी प्रकार इस कष्ट समुद्र के पार हो सकूँ ।
२. इसकी हृदय से की गई प्रार्थना को (बृहस्पतिः) = वे ज्ञानियों के ज्ञानी , गुरुओं के गुरु प्रभु (शुश्राव) = सुनते हैं और इसके लिए (अंहूरणात्) = इस पाप व अन्धकारमय लोक से - कूप - स्थिति से (उरु कृण्वन्) = प्रकाशमय लोक को करते हैं । प्रभु ज्ञानियों के सम्पर्क के द्वारा इसे अन्धकार से प्रकाश की ओर ले - चलते हैं । प्रभु कहते हैं कि (मे अस्य) = मेरी इस बात को (रोदसी) = द्युलोक व पृथिवीलोक (वित्तम्) = जान लें । सब यह समझ लें कि अन्ततः सब अन्धकारमय लोक के अन्धकार से घबराकर प्रकाश की ओर आना चाहते हैं । ‘अन्धकार से प्रकाश की ओर चलना’ यही मार्ग पर चलना है - ‘तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय’ ।
Connotation: - भावार्थ - काम - क्रोध व लोभ से आक्रान्त ‘त्रित’ कष्ट - कूप में गिरता है । ज्ञान - प्राप्ति के लिए प्रार्थना करता है । प्रभु ज्ञान देकर इसका रक्षण करते हैं ।

य उरु तच्छ्रवणं शुश्राव स विज्ञानं कृण्वन् त्रितः कूपेऽवहितो बृहस्पतिरंहूरणात्पृथग्भूत्वोतये देवान् हवते। अन्यत् पूर्ववत् ॥ १७ ॥
Word-Meaning: - (त्रितः) यस्त्रीन् विषयान् विद्याशिक्षाब्रह्मचर्याणि तनोति सः। अत्र त्र्युपपदात्तनोतेरौणादिको डः प्रत्ययः। (कूपे) कूपाकारे हृदये (अवहितः) अवस्थितः (देवान्) दिव्यगुणान्वितान् विदुषो दिव्यान् गुणान् वा (हवते) गृह्णाति। अत्र बहुलं छन्दसीति शपः स्थाने श्लोरभावः। (ऊतये) रक्षणाद्याय (तत्) विद्याध्यापनम् (शुश्राव) श्रुतवान् (बृहस्पतिः) बृहत्या वाचः पालकः (कृण्वन्) कुर्वन् (अंहूरणात्) अंहूरं पापं विद्यतेऽस्मिन् व्यवहारे ततः (उरु) बहु (वित्तं, मे, अस्य०) इति पूर्ववत् ॥ १७ ॥
Connotation: - यो मनुष्यो देहधारी जीवास्स्वबुद्ध्या प्रयत्नेन विदुषां सकाशात्सर्वा विद्याः श्रुत्वा मत्वा निदिध्यास्य साक्षात्कृत्वा दुष्टगुणस्वभावपापानि त्यक्त्वा विद्वान् जायते स आत्मशरीररक्षणादिकं प्राप्य बहुसुखं प्राप्नोति ॥ १७ ॥

Word-Meaning: - Trita, the soul in possession of simultaneous vision of past, present and future time, having achieved efficiency in knowledge, action and prayer, withdrawn into the cave of the heart, or, even the soul fallen into disarray in all the three ways and deep in the well of desperation, calls upon the Lord for succour, protection and spiritual elevation. The Lord, Brhaspati, lord of the universe and universal voice, listens and creates a wide path of freedom from sin, despondency and limitations. May the heaven and earth know that path and reveal the words of prayer to me.

Anvay:
Trita a man who extends or thoroughly observes three subjects i e. Wisdom, education and Brahmacharya (Continence), who is the master of the grand Vedic Speech, meditating in the well-like heart center invokes learned endowed with divine virtues or accepts divine attributes for protection, having heard much the Vedic speech, manifesting knowledge and getting rid of sins. The rest as before.
Word-Meaning: - (त्रितः) यः त्रीन् विषयान् विद्याशिक्षाब्रह्मचर्याणि तनोति सः । अत्र त्र्युपपदत् औणादिको डःप्रत्ययः
= A man who extends or thoroughly observes three subjects i e. wisdom, education and Brahmacharya.
(कूपे) कूपाकारे हृदये = In the heart which is like well.
(अवहितः) = Established.
Connotation: - The man who becomes a good scholar having heard, reflected upon, contemplated and realized from highly learned persons all sciences with his intellect and Laboure and having given up all evil attributes, habits and sins, enjoys much happiness by getting the preservation of the soul and the body.
Footnote: Sayanacharya, Wilson, Griffith and other translators take त्रित [Trita] as the name of a particular sage who was thrown into the well by his own brothers, when he quenched their thirst. How absurd and incredible is the story which ascribes such height of ingratitude to sages & yet it is on the basis of this most absurd story that the whole hymn has been translated by so many interpreters Rishi Dayananda does not take त्रित: (Tritah) as the name of any particular sage, as that would be against the fundamental principles of the Vedic terminology, but for a person who thoroughly observes wisdom, education and Brahamacharya य: त्रीन् विषयान् विद्या शिक्षा ब्रह्म्चर्याणि तनोति सः । तनु-विस्तारे ।
He takesकूपे in the sense of कुपाकारेहृदये or well-like heart Centre.

कूपे-नायं कूपो बाह्यः । अन्नमये नीरसे जडे अपाम् उद्भवः । त्रितः तृतीय स्थाने ततः व्याप्तः पुरुषः, अन्नमयोद्धाराय जडेऽवरुह्यावस्थित इत्यर्थः ।। i. e. The well referred to in the Mantra is not external well etc.
